Adam Drake trifecta at Fallout RC Arenacross

The 2019 Fallout RC Arenacross race was held at the Jack Giesy Arena in Ridgefield, Washington this past weekend, attracting over 280 entries for the 1/8th and 1/10th scale off-road classes. The 1/8th Nitro Buggy class had Adam Drake taking the overall TQ and also the win in the 30-minute A-main, leaving behind Kyle Johnson in 2nd, a lap down. Mason Eppley, runner-up after the qualifiers, came in 3rd to round of the podium in front of Tanner Day and Tyler Wilbur.

1/8th Nitro Truggy saw another dominating performance of Adam Drake who top qualified the class and also brought home the win in the 30-minute A-main. Kyle Johnson came in 2nd, some 23 seconds behind as Cody Grams completed the top 3 result.

Adam would complete the sweep with the TQ and overall win in 1/8th E-Buggy. Winning A1 and A2 he was able to sit out A3 that was won by Andy DiBrino to cement his overall runner-up spot from Tyler Wilbur in 3rd.

Yeah Racing 4-Tec 2.0 aluminium centre shaft

Yeah Racing have introduced an aluminium centre driveshaft for the Traxxas 4-Tec 2.0 on-road car. Machined from high-quality aluminium and coming anodised blue or black the shaft is a drop fit and a welcomed replacement of the standard composite item. Using the metal centre driveshaft will improve durability and drivetrain efficiency especially when running higher power motors.

2019 Masters of Foam – Report

The annual Masters of Foam race was held at the Racing Arena Limburg this past weekend, attracting nearly 90 entries for the 1/12th scale Modified, Stock 13.5T and Stock 17.5T classes. In the fastest class of the weekend, Modified, it was Roche driver Ollie Payne with the overall TQ some six seconds in front of Project Godspeed’s Markus Mobers while Roche driver Jacques Libar came in 3rd. The opening two A-mains saw Ollie walking away with pretty dominant wins for an early overall victory as Markus Mobers and Jacques Libar ended the day in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Destiny’s Vesa Yli and Tim Altmann (KaTi) rounded out the top 5.

In the Stock 13.5T class, the largest of the weekend, attracting 52 entries alone, Carl Van Den Bulck took the overall TQ some three tenths of a seconds in front of Steven Koiter with Patrick Gassauer coming in 3rd, another 0.3 seconds back. The finals then again saw Carl holding the upper hand as Martin Wilfinger and Jaques Libar snatched the final podium spots from Vesa Yli and Patrick Gassauer in 4th and 5th respectively.

Finally in the Stock 17.5T category Dean Burbach and Haroun Schobner battled for the overall TQ with Dean coming out on top only a tenth of a second in front of Haroun. The finals were swept by Dean who took wins in all three A-main legs for the overall in front of Fabian Nitschke in 2nd and Haroun Schobner in 3rd. Ingo Aretz and Christian Krieg-Eich completed the top 5.

Ty Tessmann sweeps U.S. Open Fuel Championship

Sun City Raceway of Canutillo, Texas held the U.S. Open Fuel Championship this past weekend, attracting nearly 115 entries. In the 1/8th Nitro Buggy class it was Xray’s Ty Tessmann with the overall TQ and he would also take a tone to tone win in the 45-minute A-main event, leaving behind 4th place qualifier, Tekno RC’s Jared Tebo in 2nd despite the latter being able to hang with Ty in the opening stages of the race. HB Racing’s Spencer Heckert would complete the top 3 result a lap behind Jared while TLR’s Tanner Denney and Team Associated’s Chris Boice completed the top 5 results.

In the E-Buggy class the single 10-minute A-main was a pretty entertaining affair with the top positions swapping constantly. In the end it was runner-up after the qualifiers, Ty Tessmann, who was able to get past 3rd place qualifier, Jared Tebo in the closing stages for his second win this weekend. Jared had to settle for 2nd overakk, Spencer Heckert came in 3rd to make another podium while Brandon Rose and top qualifier, Ryan Maifield completed the top 5.

Jade Lim takes 2019 MNL Championship title

The fifth and final round of the Malaysia National League was held this past weekend, attracting 45 drivers to compete at the Precint 6 Putrajaya track. In the Pro Nitro Buggy class SWorkz’s Danny K would take the overall TQ, however after the hour-long A-main event it was young Team Associated driver, Jade Lim with the win an ultra narrow 0.2 seconds in front of 14th place qualifier, JQRacing’s Adam Fikri. Danny K had to settle for 3rd overall, some two laps down as Mizan (Serpent) and Alfie Othman (SWorkz) came in 4th and 5th respectively.

With the win Jade would be crowned MNL 2019 champion as he was able to secure wins in four of the five races held. Danny K would end the championship on the runner-up spot from Adam Fikri in 3rd overall.

Over in the Semi-Pro Buggy class it was Mugen’s Faris Faisal with the day’s win from Team Associated’s Derek Chu while Pa’an Mfs (Kyosho), YC Chong (Mugen) and Azneil Imi (Kyosho) completed the top 5 results.

As for the overall Semi-Pro championship it was Faris Faisal with the title from fellow Mugen racer, Yc Chong in 2nd and Derek Chu in 3rd.

In the Amateur category the TQ went to AE’s Kayden, however SWorkz driver Ali would bring home the win at the fifth and final round as Shane (SWorkz) came in 2nd from Azwan Nur (Team Associated) in 3rd. Ari (Kyosho) and Shahrul Adzim (Xray) came in 4th and 5th respectively.

Overall in the championship it was Shane with the 2019 title from Azwan 2nd and Melvinder Singh (Mugen) in 3rd.

Dani Choi doubles at KMRCA 1/8th Off-road Champs

The 2019 KMRCA 1/8th Off-road Championship was held at the I-Cheon track in South Korea this past weekend. In the Nitro Pro class it was Kyosho’s Dani Choi with the overall TQ thanks to a clean sweep in the triple qualifiers and he would also bring home the win in the 45-minute A-main event, held in chilling temperatures. A lap behind Dani it was HB Racing’s Hanyoung Jeon on the runner-up spot while another lap down, Kyosho’s Yeonho Kim would complete the top 3 result.

Over in Nitro Truggy it was again Dani Choi with the overall TQ after winning all three qualifiers and he would lead the way in the 30-minute A-main also, leaving behind from SWorkz’s Ju Won Kyu 2nd and Kyosho’s Young Seok Ko in 3rd.

Takahata crowned World Champion as Matsukura denied once again

‘To finish first, first you must finish’ was a phrase that rang true at today’s 1:8 Onroad World Championships in California as a rather sedate Main was turned on it’s head with 12-minutes to go with Mugen’s Shoki Takahata eventually crowned the new World Champion.  The 1-hour encounter started out with Top Qualifier Dario Balestri leading from Infinity team-mate Naoto Matsukura but during his second fuel stop defending Champion Balestri would collect a badly released Greiner, the impact braking the body on the Italian’s car and end his quest for 2 in a row.  This allowed Matsukura to take control of the race.  Having shown the world the class of driver he is when he led in France on his nitro debut two years ago before a flat battery denied him the title, everything looked perfect for the reigning 1:10 Nitro World Champion to make history and hold both title consecutively but it wasn’t to be.  With just two fuel stops separating him from winning a rear pulley stripped and once again there was heartbreak for the Japanese driver ad his mechanic Masayuki Miura, his race was done.  Graduating to the it was another 1:10 World Champion who looked on target to finally match Adrien Bertin’s record as the only double champion nitro onroad.  Having found himself almost a lap down at the start following contact at the start and then received a stop & go for his bad release in the pits, Dominic Greiner was out front.  Counting down the minutes he then hit trouble with just a little over 5-minutes left on the clock – the watching crowd in disbelief at the unfolding drama.  Always within sight of the lead, Takahata was now the fourth different race leader well clear of now second placed Shimo Takaaki.  The manufacturers sole representative in the final, to the chants of ‘Mugen’ the 25-year-old crossed the loop to take a very popular first World title while Balestri salvaged the final step on the podium behind the bridesmaid of nitro racing Takahaki.

‘It is like a dream’, was Takahata’s reaction to his win, the Japanese driver having made his Worlds debut on American soil in the 200mm in 2010.  He added, ‘I always believed I could win it but it is still a surprise to do it’.  Making the podium in France two years ago, he said that having seen everyone else have problems he drove the final minutes of the race ‘very safe’.  Having missed out on making Super Pole after struggling in early qualifying, he said, ‘Today my car was perfect in both the Semi and the Final’.  Changing tyres on the left side only after just 20-minutes, he said this strategy was key to putting him the position to be in sight of the win.  Takahata will get to defend his title on home soil in 2-years time with the announcement during the event here at Steel City RC Raceway that Infinity International RC Speedway has been award the 23rd running of the championships.

Matsukura said, ‘I was just driving safe just watching where Dominic was.   I wasn’t pushing and I knew I could have went quicker if I needed.  I was controlling the race’.  On target to the World title of a fourth category World title, the 1:12 and Electric Touring Car World Champion said, ‘I don’t know why this happened to me again today, it’s the same bad luck I had two years ago’.

Asked what had cause his retirement a very despondent Greiner said, ‘Something broke’.  Explaining his poor start to the race the Serpent driver said, ‘It was very tight at the start.  There was no space and I crashed into Jeff (Hamon) and flipped over.  The marshal was not looking so I lost almost a lap’.   After getting collected by fellow Aussie Jesse Davis with 10-minutes to go in the race and needing a lengthy stop for repairs, team-mate Hamon would recover to cross the final 4th on his Worlds debut as a Serpent driver bettering his previous best of 5th in Miami last year in 1:10.

Commenting on his title loss, Balestri said, ‘The race was under control for the first 7-minutes but then on the second refuelling Greiner’s car was released in my path and I hit it which completely destroyed my race.  The body was broken and because of the the hole for the pipe was moved and the engine could not run properly’.  The Italian continued, ‘I got the podium but only because others had problems in the race.  It was bad day for me but that is racing’.  After a stunning drive in the Semi Final to come from last to a bump up spot, rival Kurzbuch summed up his race similarly to Balestri saying, ‘In the first corner I collected Dominic and from there it was not my race’.  In the end the Shepherd driver retire half into the race with engine issues.

Never in contention for the win over the 1-hour, Shimo said his rivals were ‘very fast’ and on this occasion he was ‘not so fast’.  The driver with the great number of podium finishes without being crowned World Champion, he said while second place was a good result it was one which because he prefer not to be in having had to settle for the runner-up so many times in the passed.

Stunning drive puts Kurzbuch in final after start-line flameout

A stunning drive has put former Champion Simon Kurzbuch in the 1:8 Onroad World Championship Final in California.  Suffering an engine flame out on the grid, the pole sitter for the second of the Semi Finals missed the start and had to be returned to the pits to be restarted as the rest of the field got underway and the general feeling of the stunned onlookers was the Swiss ace’s event was done.  Kurzbuch however defied the odds, driving at 110% he started to put himself back in contention for a bump up spot as the crowd watch on in awe.  Setting the fastest lap of the race he crossed the line in 3rd position to ensure he gets another chance to do battle with his great rival and reigning champion Dario Balestri.  Up front in the Semi Odd, Jesse Davis made the race his own, leading home fellow Australian Jeff Hamon to secure both drivers their first 1:8 Worlds Final start.  In the first of the Semi Finals, Dominic Greiner led from start to finish despite struggling with his engine with Shoki Takahata a close second and Toni Gruber third.  Unfortunately for Lamberto Collari he fell just three minutes short of making the Main Final on the 10th Anniversary of his last World title after he suffered an engine flame out. With the second Semi the faster the finals, the two drivers to book their place in the main event at the 22nd running of IFMAR Worlds would be Takaaki Shimo and Carmine Raiola.

Reacting to his dramatic Semi, Kurzbuch said, ‘my father went to the starting grid and the engine flamed out.  The engine setting was good so I don’t know what happened but in the end we had a lucky outcome’.  He continued, ‘We had to work hard for it and show everything we had. I’m sure my father was the fastest in the pits in the final’. Looking to the main final, the Shepherd drivers said, ‘everything from now on is a bonus. I will just enjoy the 60-minutes but the car in the Semi was amazing.  We matched the set-up to the conditions. Apart from the flame out the package is perfect for the final. Lets see’.

Winning with a good buffer, Davis said, ‘This is my first IFMAR A-Main,  I’ve made five Semis in a row but had bad luck but today we did it finally’.  On his Semi Final, his fastest time securing him 3rd on the grid behind Infinity team-mates Dario Balestri and Naoto Matsukura, he said, ‘It was the perfect race. We stuck to our fuel stops and knew the tyres would do the distance. I just raced the clock’.  Regarding his World final debut, he said, ‘I think the car is so good I just need to keep circulating for 1-hour and see what I can do’.

Having made his first final at the 1:10 Championships last year in Miami, Hamon said, ‘It went pretty good. It was a pretty solid and clean race. My pit crew was solid even if I was stressing a little over them fully fuelling the car so that if I had more up my sleeve if I needed it’.  A new signing to the Serpent team this year, starting 4th on the grid he said his goal is to better his 5th place finish from Miami.

Despite winning his Semi from the pole, a very concerned Greiner said, ‘I had a problem with the engine. I had to make one more fuel stop than planned. Something is not right’.  Having quickly pulled clear of the field at the start, the Serpent driver had just 3/10ths on Takahata at the end of the 30-minutes and looking to the final the German said, ‘For sure we will change the engine but maybe also the pipe and the tank.  Something is not working with the power’.

Takahata said he made a ‘super safe drive’ to book his second consecutive Worlds Final start.  Starting third on the grid, the Mugen driver had to use caution at the start to avoid crashing.  Describing his pace as ‘quite good’ he said he will ‘try my best’ to better his 2017 podium finish.  Asked about strategy, the Japanese factory Mugen driver said that based on the car’s performance both his run time and tyre wear are safe and these should be factors in the 1-hour final.

Securing his first World Champion Final appearance, Toni Gruber said, ‘This track is really difficult. It changes every time so I hoped the car would work for the conditions and it did’.  The Shepherd driver did however suffer a gearbox issue in the second half of the race which causes him some difficulties.  He explained, ‘Sometimes the car was getting stuck in second gear, one lap it would be fine, the next lap it would get stuck so we need to check this for the final’.  Battling with Collari during the race, the German said, ‘I was having a close fight with Collari but I had some luck when he had a problem with his engine. Asked about the final, he said, ‘When you bump up from the Semi Final I think your only goal has to be to push, this is the World Final.  One hour is a long time, a lot can happen but we will see what we can do’.

Remarks – Winning his Semi Final to book his spot in the main event here in California, Dominic is running Serpent’s new 989 with the car featuring just a few modifications for the high traction at Steel City RC Raceway.  The car’s uprights have been modified to allow weights to be mounted to them, extra weight the order of the week.  To stiffen up the car, a thicker 2.5mm radio tray has been fitted to the car.  Another common feature throughout the pits, the car has a carbon brace across the front of the radio tray.

Semi Final Line-up complete at Steel City RC Speedway

After a morning of some intense racing the line up for the Semi Finals at the 22nd running of the IFMAR 1:8 Onroad World Championships are set at Steel City RC Speedway.  In the first of the 20-minute Quarter finals, two former Champions battled for the win with 9-times Champion Lamberto Collari getting by pole sitter and long time race leader Robert Pietsch in the final stint of the race.  Bumping up from the 1/8 Final, Patrick Schaefer would work his way through the field surviving a moment in the pitlane and benefiting from some key retirements including former finalists Teemu Leino and Robin D’Hondt.  Finishing 4th, the race was the end of road for 1:10 Worlds podium finisher Alessio Mazzeo.  In the second of the Quarter Finals, there was heartbreak for Steven Jovanovic who was comfortably leading but with just 3-laps to go ran out of fuel.  This meant Jonathan Gandin, a driver who had his own run time issues in qualifying, would take the win to go to the Semis along with former Champion Tadahiko Sahashi and American Bryce Butterfield.

22nd after qualifying putting him 3rd on the Quarter Final grid, on progressing to the Semi, his 2017 Worlds ending with a plug failure while leading the 1/8 Final, Collari said, ‘Now the car is much better.  Yesterday I couldn’t push without flipping but today we found a good set-up that the car doesn’t want to flip’.  Looking to make his first final since 2009 when he won his last World title, asked about the 30-minute Semi the Infinity driver said, ‘The car is fast.  I hope I can push without problems’.

One Italian driver starting the rise of what looks like a promising career here at Steel City RC Speedway, 16-year-old Gandin was very happy to make his first Semi final, this only his second 1:8 World Championship. Getting as far as the 1/64th Final in France, here in California he quickly established himself as a front runner putting his ARC in the fastest heat for qualifying. Unfortunately run time issues hampered him from translating that speed into a good qualifying. Lining up 6th on the grid for his Quarter Final, making the bump up to the Semi he said, ‘the Semi was our goal and after practice went better than expected we kind of expected to be in the Semi but our fuel consumption caused us problems.  In the Quarter Final we better understood how to manage it and now we are in the Semi so I am very happy.  We will leave the car the same for the Semi and try our best to make the final’.

Salven calls time on WC career

Michael Salven has called time on his World Championship racing career, one of nitro onroad racing’s best known figures made the announcement that having made his World Championship debut in California in 1987, that the 22nd running of the IFMAR 1:8 Worlds here in Fontana, California was the right time to take a step back from racing.  The 58 year-old German, who has enjoyed all of his professional career with Serpent, a company which was instrumental in the early development of the class, Salven bowed out of the Worlds competition here this morning at Steel City RC Speedway when he failed to finish the 1/16th finals.  Asked about his decision, he said, ‘The Pro guys turn up with everything sorted. I turned up here with three engines that still needed to be run in and it turned out none of them are very good.  I will still race, I probably have a few more Euros in me, but its important I race because as the designer of our cars I need to know what’s going on’.

Reflecting on his career, he said, the first WC I did was 1987 at Ranch Pit Shop which was owned by Gil Losi, it’s gone now, but I am told it’s only about 30-minutes from here.  It was actually a shitty event for me, and this one was even worse, but I had a few good ones in between’.  Only missing one World Championship over the 32-years, Brazil in 2015, he said, ‘Phuket in Thailand (1995) was really good and the race in Mexico (1997) was amazing.  I TQ’d both of those races but some stupid guy called Collari was there which meant I never won’ – joking about the 9-time World Champion.  Joining Serpent as designer in 1991 it is there that Red RC’s own personal relationship with Salven began with our founder Eoghain O’Briain working alongside him and even having having the pleasure of being his pitman on the odd occasion. We wish Michael well as he steps back from World Championship competition but look forward to meeting him in the pits at future Worlds and who knows, maybe in the future his son’s name might appear on a future World Championships entry list.

The set, made from durable hard-anodised 7075 aluminium, prevents rust, which minimises corrosion and promotes smooth action of the turnbuckles. Remarks – Running Shepherd’s Velox V8.2, Simon’s car is fitted with their brand new advanced weight system which allows fast balance (front-rear) changes in the pits. The car also has a new optional narrow front shock tower, eccentric inserts in front uprights, Shepherd low friction belts. It also features a prototype test version of additional front weights made by Simon’s dad who has also ‘hand tuned’ the front bumper.

Remarks – Describing his IF18 as ‘a standard’ car, Super Pole winner Naoto said the only differences to the car as to how he would normally run it are a front brace on the radio tray, weights in the car and on the front bumper and the use of a brass battery holder to help balance the car on the high traction conditions.

Remarks – Qualifying for the 1/4 Finals here at Steel City RC Speedway, Mirko is driving Capricorn’s new C804.  Over its predecessor the car features lower arms that are 2mm longer with the chassis narrower to suit.  The upper arms are also fixed differently now being mounted to the new radio tray making the car more rigid.  The front bulkheads are also 2mm lower.  At the rear of the car the bulkheads are narrower making the centre of gravity better.  The car has a new radio tray and the radio box reduced in size sitting now in the middle of the car.  Mirko is also running the optional hubs both front and rear.

Matsukura blitzes rivals in Super Pole

Naoto Matsukura effectively blitzed his rivals in Super Pole needing just three laps to set the fastest lap and book his direct starting position in the final alongside Infinity team-mate and Top Qualifier Dario Balestri.  Only the second time Super Pole has been held at the 1:8 Onroad World Championships, the 2nd through 5th placed qualifiers had the opportunity to avoid racing in the Semi Finals with the process comprising of a 3-minute warm up following by 6-timed laps of which each drivers fastest was counted.  With three of the drivers participants of Super Pole in France two years ago, first up was Jesse Davis with his best attempt a 14.640.  Next to go was Dominic Greiner who was making his first 1:8 Super Pole. Timing issues however meant his run was restarted and after much deliberation between officials on how he could continue the run he was forced to start his timed run from the pit lane with just a single warm-up lap.  Despite the disruption he improved on Davis’ time by 1/10th of second.  Qualifying third overall, next up was Simon Kurzbuch who pushed Greiner off the top spot by 0.003 of a second.  Last to go and knowing what he needed to do, Matsukura duly delivered a 14.449 lap to go quicker than Kurzbuch by 0.084.

Reacting to his Super Pole win, Matsukura said, ‘In the last qualifying round my engine was rich but we kept that engine and made adjustments in the warm-up.  After the first lap I knew I had the car & engine to do the lap I needed’.  Happy at maintaining his 100% appearance in nitro onroad World finals, this being only his third attempt and his third time qualifying into the final, the reigning 1:10 World Champion said, ‘Everything looks good for the final but 1-hour is a long time so lets see.  I remember the battery from 2-years ago.  I will make sure to fully charge’.  Leading the final in Monteux he would crash out after his receiver battery died.

Having also missed out on the Super Pole to Matsukura last time, Kurzbuch said, ‘the car was now pushing a bit but I tried my best and it was not enough so it was the same outcome as 2-years ago’.  Looking to tomorrow’s Semi Finals for which he will start on pole, the Shepherd driver said, ‘for the finals the car is OK for the best lap now it was not enough but we know what we need to do in our Semi’.

‘I don’t know if this is fair.  I had to come in 3 times and then the last time I come in I get just one lap before my timed laps’, was Greiner’s reaction after his Super Pole run.  Not sure what the timing issue was that forced his run to be stopped, the Serpent driver continued, ‘The others had more time to get into a flow but my flow and concentration was broken because of the problem’.  Now set to start on pole for the first of the Semi Finals, he added, ‘When I thought I was on my timed laps, I thought the first of them was my best one’.

Speaking about his 6-laps, Davis said, ‘the result was sort of what I expected’.  The Infinity driver added, ‘we changed the engine and it was not better so we’ll take that back out and put in the other one for the Semi Finals.  We should be alright again in the Semi’.
