Yokomo YD-2 aluminium ball diff kit

Yokomo have introduced an aluminium ball diff kit for the YD-2 series of RWD drift cars. The lightweight unit features aluminium outdrives that weigh in at only about one third of the weight of steel outdrives, making for lower rotational masses and thus quicker throttle response and a reduced gyroscopic effect. The set includes all needed parts and as well as thrust bearing and diff ball grease.

Associated Electrics setup mats

Associated Electrics have introduced four new 2019 setup mats that come in four branded styles: Team Associated, Reedy Power, Factory Team, and Element. The mats are roughly 400x500mm in size and provide a protective surface for countertops and RC pit tables alike. Preventing stains from nitro fuel, shock oil, dirt and grime, these mats are a great way to protect the countertops in a shop or at home while creating a factory look. They also work great as RC pit table setup boards, providing a nice flat surface for pre-race checks of ride height and camber and toe. In addition they are lightweight for easy travel to and from the racetrack.

Matt Olson wins 4WD Pro Truck at West Coast Nationals

The 10th Annual 5th scale West Coast Nationals were held at Good Ol’Boyz RC Club Raceway in Bakersfield, California last weekend. The track layout was super easy but also in a way very difficult as the speeds were high and racing was so close that it became a game of tenths of a second. In 4WD Pro Truck Brian Sullivan and Matthew Olson battled it out for the overall TQ with both being tied for TQ with two qual wins a piece. For tie breaker it came down to total time and Brian edged out Matt by four hundredths of a second. The 40-minute A-main event then saw Brian, Matt and also Josh Mitchell matching lap for lap so three trucks were running for the win. With a little luck Matt had a shot at the win come the 17th lap as he was able to make a clean inside pass and from there he never looked back to take the win some six seconds in front of Brian while Jason Sheerer came in 3rd to round out the podium.

SWorkz S14-3 Dirt 1/10th 4WD electric buggy kit

SWorkz have introduced their new S14-3 Dirt 1/10th scale 4WD electric buggy kit developed especially for dirt tracks. The kit includes a centre gear differential for improved bump and lower traction handling with one of the unique features of the new buggy being the 5mm axle universal cross driveshafts that are specially designed and made from SWorkz’s 1/8th buggy steel material. For dirt off-road racing, the designers kept the original S14-3 C-hub steering system but moved the motor and battery positions further back for improved traction. With this new centre layout, the S14-3D has an improved overall balance. Balestri fastest as free practice concludes at 1:8 Worlds

At the conclusion of two days of free practice at the IFMAR 1:8 World Championships in California it is reigning Champion Dario Balestri who was fastest.  The Infinity driver set the fastest 3-consecutive laps in the tenth & final free practice run topping the times from a much improved Simon Kurzbuch, the two great rivals separated by just 12/100ths of a second over the best respective 3-consecutive laps.  Shoki Takahata added variety to the top of the time sheets at Steel City RC Speedway taking his Mugen to the 3rd fastest time, his best laps also set in the final round of practice.  Behind the top three, the margin a little bigger, Jeffrey Rietveld posted the fourth fastest time followed by Silvio Hachler and former champions Lamberto Collari & Robert Pietsch.  Tomorrow drivers face four rounds of seeding practice to determine the order of the heats for qualifying which gets underway on Wednesday.

Reacting to topping the times with ‘it’s ok’, asked why it was only OK, Balestri replied, ‘because maybe I can find something more.  The car is fast but not perfect’.  The Italian added, ‘it’s consistent but I think we can make it faster over the full run.  At least that’s what I will try for tomorrow’.

‘Finally’ was how a much more upbeat Kurzbuch described his finish to free practice.  The Shepherd driver said, ‘the last two rounds were really good as I finally had feeling in the car.  Now it is going in the right way’.  Having struggled with the tracks high traction he said, ‘we tested so much that last few days but we started from zero again today and now we are on the right way.  It has been a hard four days for the whole team and my dad.  Tonight can go for dinner happy.’  Asked what the improved set-up was, the 2015 World Champion replied, ‘It is tending to flip less and now I can push for good lap times.  We are back in the game’.

Takahata said his time was a culmination of putting the best of all the set-ups he tried in the two days of IPD running and yesterday opening free practice day together adding he was ‘satisfied’ with how his car is performance not just over 3-laps but also over the entire run.  Asked what he thought of the track, the 2017 Worlds podium finisher said, ‘It looks easy but it’s difficult. It is totally different to anything we have in Japan and the traction is different everyday so I have to adapt the car for this’.  On a track where horse power is a big part of performance due to the high traction, the factory OS driver said the new engine he has been supplied with from the Japanese manufacturer is ‘working very good’.

‘Not too bad’ joked Rietveld when asked how is day went.  The Dutch driver continued, ‘engine is super important on this track and we finally made a selection of the good engines.  Now we know what is fast and not fast and it is looking really good’.  On car set the Infinity driver said, ‘we have run the same set-up for 6 or 7 practices.  The car is amazing so we could just focus on doing a lot of stuff with engines’.  Commenting on the track layout, he said, ‘it’s an awesome track.  One of the most fun I have driven.  It has everything you want as a driver’.

Giving his thoughts on free practice, Hachler said, ‘yesterday was better than today but we are very competitive all the time.  We have a good car and good engines.  We are more than ready for qualification’.  Asked why he felt yesterday was better, the ARC driver replied, ‘the track changed a lot from yesterday.  There was a lot more traction yesterday and for my car it was a lot easier to handle the super high traction’.

Davis set early pace at Worlds as drivers battle high traction

Australia’s Jesse Davis is the early pace setter at the IFMAR 1:8 World Championships in California, the Infinity driver fastest in the opening day of official practice and again after 2 of the 5 scheduled rounds of today’s action.  Behind, Dominic Greiner is second fastest today after topping the Round 7 of practice from reigning World Champion Dario Balestri and reigning 1:10 World Champion Naoto Matsukura.  Next up it is ARC’s Silvio Hachler with the Mugen of 2018 World podium finisher Shoki Takahata completing the Top 6 times for this morning’s opening two runs.  Super high winds overnight and this morning meant a delayed start to today’s schedule with the traction sprayed Steel City RC Speedway surface acting like a magnet to the dust blown in by the winds, winds that are forecast to return again on Wednesday when qualifying is to begin.  As a result of the delay, drivers now have shorter run but already the traction is back up to the ‘super high’ levels drivers are finding difficult.

Commenting on his pace, Davis said, ‘the car is good.  We came out here before the testing cut off for 4-days and got a good feeling with everything.  We’re trying to keep that going now and work through engine by engine to make sure they are all good’.  He continued, ‘we are doing a little with the set-up and fine tuning it as we go and trying to keep calm’.  Asked about the traction, he replied, ‘it’s quite high and we have got to run new tyres every run so it’s important to take caution at the start but the traction has levelled out now.  It’s not what we are used to or expect at a 1:8 Worlds but its good fun’.

‘Difficult’ was Greiner’s description of practice so far.  The Serpent driver added, ‘I was having problems with traction roll.  Every corner I am on 2-wheels and then when I try to throttle out of the corner it is doing strange things’.  The German continued, ‘we will try a different shock set-up now and see’.  Asked if the track was changing much between runs he said, ‘we are changing so much things (on the car) every run it is hard to say if the track is changing much, but for the evening we know the traction is even higher so it is even more difficult’.

With 3 more practice runs today and then a day of seeding practice tomorrow, Balestri said, ‘It’s going ok.  We are just testing.  We have a lot of time for this’.  The Infinity driver added, ‘we know the basic set-up from yesterday and the traction is back to the same as yesterday now’.  For his next run the Italian will test harder plastics on his car concluding he was just going through his planned programme.

Making a huge impact on the world of nitro onroad when he made his nitro racing debut at the previous 1:8 World Championship in France, where he lead the final, Matsukura was happier with his car in Round 7 of practice after struggling with the high traction yesterday.  He explained, ‘we came 2-weeks ago and the track was different so yesterday I can’t drive without flipping but now its getting better so now we can get back to our normal programme’.  Asked how he liked the track, the Japanese ace said, ‘I really like it.  The layout is like Japanese style and it also has the high traction’.

Track Focus – Steel City RC Speedway

Track Name – Steel City RC Speedway
Owners – Phil & Kyle Goodwine
Country – USA
Location – Auto Club Speedway, Fontana, California
Direction – Clockwise
Surface – Asphalt

Steel City RC Speedway plays host to the 22nd running of the IFMAR 1:8 Onroad World Championship and the track has immediately made an impression on the drivers with reigning World Champion Dario Balestri going as far as describing it as ‘maybe one of the most beautiful’ he has driven on.  Its high grip levels however are set to be the greatest challenge to drivers over the coming week.  Only opened last year, the track is located at the full size Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, and it has quickly established itself as one of America most high profile outdoor tracks.  Earlier this year it hosted the famed Reedy Race of Champions for electric touring cars after it lost its home following the closure of the Tamiya Raceway and now it has gathered together the best nitro drivers in the World to decide who is the No.1 come Saturday.

The story behind the track name and how it came into existence is an interesting one.  Originally the land the track sits on was part of the Kaiser Steel factory, the 2nd largest steel producer in the world during World War 2.  The company however went bankrupt and was bought by Penske, one of US Motorsport’s most successful teams, who built the full size motor speedway.  Running an electric touring car race in one of the parking lots during the Indycar weekend at the track, that was the start of the relationship between the real track and the Goodwines.  Father and son team Phil & Kyle Goodwine would negotiate a lease to build the impressive looking track that is now Steel City RC Speedway and their choice of red colour for the infield have made it one of the most distinctive and easily identifiable tracks out there.

Giving his reaction to the track, Balestri said, ‘it is super beautiful.  The layout is great and the surface is like a billiard table.  It is an absolutely great layout for 1:8’.  Asked about the high traction levels, the track being sprayed for traction, he replied, ‘the grip is amazing so even if you find a good balance you still need to manage your driving not to flip.  You are always on the limit’.

Former World Champion Simon Kurzbuch said, ‘the layout is really good.  It has a bit of everything, a fast chicane, a nice left section, it is really nice’.  While a fan of the layout, the Swiss driver added, ‘the grip is on a level that is not drivable yet, for me anyway so I am going to have to adapt my driving.  I have never experienced such high grip before.  In the morning and in the evening almost everyone flipped’.

‘It’s nice.  The layout is challenging and fast but the grip conditions make it very special, was Dominic Greiner’s thoughts on the track.  The former 1:10 World Champion continued, ‘we tested here before but now things are very different with way more traction so we can’t use any of the set-up from testing.  We need try to make it that the car doesn’t flip’.  The German added, ‘the surface is super flat, no bumps, and there is going to be less tyre wear with the high traction but with big tyres for quali it is going to be super hard to find a set-up’.

2019/20 Euro Touring Series Rd1 – Report

The first round of the 2019/2020 Euro Touring Series takes place this weekend in Vienna, Austria. Being held once again at the Messe Wien exhibition centre, alongside the large Vienna Model Fair, the drivers were in the spotlight as passing visitors packed the barriers around the track throughout the day. In the Modified class, defending champion Bruno Coehlo opened proceedings by taking the first qualifying round, held on Friday evening. But come Saturday, it was his team-mate Alexander Hagberg who showed the pace as he took rounds two and three and four to put himself on pole position. Last securing the top qualifying position some five years ago back in February 2014 in Germany, the Xray driver was clearly happy with his new Xray chassis. Bruno amassed enough points to secure second on the grid, as the German world champions Marc Rheinard and Ronald Volker battled over third, with Ronald finally taking it with a P2 in the final qualifier. Elliott Harper showed a good amount of speed, mixing with the top four drivers during the qualifying heats and will start the A Finals from fifth on the grid.

Touring Modified qualifying top 10:
1. Alexander Hagberg – Xray
2. Bruno Coelho – Xray
3. Ronald Volker – Yokomo
4. Marc Rheinard – Infinity
5. Elliott Harper – Xray
6. Lucas Urbain – Awesomatix
7. Yannic Pruemper – Infinity
8. Frederik Suedhoff – Awesomatix
9. Christopher Krapp – Yokomo
10.Oliver Havranek – Xray

Over in the Pro Stock class, Jan Ratheisky set the pace in Q1, before rival Max Machler responded and took Q2 and Q3. Jan fought back to take Q4 and force a tie-break, but Max’s was the only driver to make 22-lap runs in qualifying and so will start at the front. The defending series champion Simon Lauter had some good speed throughout, but missed a little luck and will start third on the grid, with Danish drivers Frederik Mikkelsen and Kevin Nielsen making up the top five starters.

Touring Pro Stock qualifying top 10:
1. Max Maechler
2. Jan Ratheisky
3. Simon Lauter
4. Frederik Mikkelsen
5 Kevin Nielsen
6. Patrick Folman
7. Dominic Vogl
8. Oliver Havranek
9. Markus Wegmann
10.Leo Arnold

The newly introduced Front Wheel Drive class had the biggest entry of the event, and Steven Olsen wanted to be the first star of the class – he took Round 1, 3 and 4 of qualifying to wrap up the overall TQ, lining up for the A Final ahead of long-time ETS supporter Henrik Heitsch. Enrico Jung took the best time in Q2, but couldn’t quite match that speed later on and so will start third, with Stefan Schulz and Christian Driessle rounding out the top half of the grid.

In the Formula division, David Ehrbar looked to have things under control despite pressure from Jan Ratheisky. David took three TQ’s to Jan’s one, meaning David will start up front. Behind the two Germans, Matej Dobnikar lines up third, ahead of Olivier Bultynck and Andreas Steibler.

The Masters class had Alexander Stocker, the defending champion, securing the pole position, despite some tough competition as Nathan Parker will line up second, Casper Morgen third and Toni Mateo and Patrick Meinecke completing the top five on the starting grid.

Finally, Daniel Poehlmann will be leading the field off for the Stock 17.5 A Finals, after taking two of the four rounds of qualifying. Klaus Waldmann took Q2 and will line up second, with Joachim Altendorf rolling off from third. Luis Moreno topped the opening qualifier, but couldn’t back it up and will start fourth, with Tobias Baumback making the top five.

After the Touring Modified A-mains, Alexander Hagberg leaves the opening round of the series with a maximum points haul, having secured the overall TQ and then backed it up with wins in the opening two A Finals. With it being a long time since the Swedish driver led the overall standings, it was clearly an emotional win for the usually quiet driver, demonstrating how much the victory meant to him after a lot of extensive testing for the Xray team and their new platform. With A1 taking place on Friday night, Hagberg quickly opened up a small lead from team-mate Bruno Coelho. A fast starting Ronald Volker managed to pass the Portuguese driver in the early stages, with Coelho then dropping further down the field. This allowed Marc Rheinard up into third, but the Infinity driver had the close attentions of Elliott Harper for the remainder of the race. Out in front, Hagberg controlled the pace to win by a couple of seconds over Volker. Hagberg wrapped up the overall victory with another clinical drive in A2. With even Coelho, often regarded as the fastest Touring Car driver of the moment, unable to match his team-mates pace, Hagberg was quick to be congratulated by his competitors as he crossed the finish line. The action of A2 was between the German drivers of Volker and Rheinard, with Rheinard pulling off a pass on his countryman to move into third and leave things wide open for the podium places in the third final. With the pole position left empty, Coelho was able to drive a measured race to pick up the win in A3, securing second overall. Volker challenged him hard, but never was able to quite mount a serious challenge. Behind, Rheinard spent five minutes fending off the attentions of Harper, the British driver securing his best ETS result for nearly a decade.

Touring Modified final result:
1. Alexander Hagberg – Xray/Hobbywing/Sunpadow
2. Bruno Coelho – Xray/Hobbywing/Sunpadow
3. Ronald Volker – Yokomo/LRP/LRP
4. Marc Rheinard – Infinity/Muchmore/Muchmore
5. Elliott Harper – Xray/LRP/LRP
6. Yannic Prumper – Infinity/Maclan/Maclan

10.Frederik Sudhoff – Awesomatix/Hobbywing/Silverback
11.Patrick Gollner – Xray/LRP/LRP

In the Pro Stock class, Max Machler secured pole position for the triple finals, but the first final saw Max dropping to third after the first minute of the race, with Jan Ratheisky inheriting the lead. Max was able to work his was back up to second, but was unable to challenge the Xray driver up front, with Frederik Mikkelsen moving from fourth on the grid up to third, as defending champion Simon Lauter slipped from third to fourth. In A2, tragedy struck Max on lap two, as his Awesomatix spun and this ended up rolling his car over a barrier, breaking part of the steering system. Gifting the lead to Jan in the process, Max could only watch from the driver stand as Ratheisky pulled away out front and cruised to the win and the overall victory. Lauter could hold on to second this time, with Patrick Folman taking third in the leg. Machler was rewarded finally in A3, taking a tone-to-tone win but being pushed by team-mate Lauter the whole time. This was the result Machler needed to take the runner up position, with Lauter rounding out the podium.

Touring Pro Stock final result:
1. Jan Ratheisky – Xray
2. Max Machler – Awesomatix
3. Simon Lauter – Awesomatix

The Front Wheel Drive class is new to ETS this season, and attracted the largest entry of all the categories. Steven Olsen secured the first ever ETS FWD pole position, but lost the lead after one minute as he fought with Henrik Heitsch and Enrico Jung. Enrico moved into first place and never looked back, as Olsen held onto second and Heitsch dropped further down the field. A2 again had Olsen making a mistake early on, and yet again it was Jung who came through from third on the grid to take the lead. This time, Heitsch held onto the second place he inherited, with Stefan Schulz taking third. With the overall win wrapped up, Jung didn’t start the third A Final, and it was some redemption for Olsen as he took the win in A3 after a great fight with Heitsch again, with David Kuschnarew moving up the field to take third in the race.

Front Wheel Drive final result:
1. Enrico Jung
2. Steven Olsen
3. Henrik Heitsch
4. Stefan Schulz
5. David Kuschnarew
6. Christian Driessle
7. Florian Luyer
8. Alexander Mayer
9. Kevin Sparbier
10.Rene Strasser
11.Patrick Meinecke

Formula has been staple of ETS for many years, and once again the battle at the front was between the current champion, David Ehrbar and former champ Jan Ratheisky. Ehrbar took the first leg, after Ratheisky dropped back and fought with Olivier Bultynck over second place – with the Belgian driver getting the upper hand by the end. A2 also saw a lights-to-flag win for Ehrbar to wrap up the overall victory early, and this time Ratheisky held onto second place – looking faster but not quite able to match the pace of the Serpent designer out in front. Bultnyck had to settle for third this time, with Andreas Stiebler rounding out the top four. Ratheisky then had a clear run to take A3, with third place starting Matej Dobnikar finally showing the same speed in the finals as he had in qualifying, to finish second ahead of Dominik Reile.

Formula final result:
1. David Ehrbar – Serpent
2. Jan Ratheisky – Xray
3. Olivier Bultynck – Roche
4. Andreas Stiebler – Serpent
5. Dominik Reile – Serpent
6. Matej Dobnikar – Xray
7. Werner Spannbruckner – Xray
8. Jitse Miedema – Infinity
9. Lukas Hoch – Xray
10.Michal Wojcik – Xray
11.Luke Lee – Xray

The Masters class, for drivers aged 40 or over, saw a great race in A1 as Nathan Parker managed to pass pole sitter Alexander Stocker. But just a few laps after taking the lead and looking on-track to end the German’s domination of the class, Parker rolled his car off the track and dropped down the field, allowing Stocker to cruise to the first leg victory. The second leg saw Stocker open up a small lead and seemed on track to secure the overall victory early, but with less than two minutes to go, some mistakes started to creep in which even saw the defending champion rolling his car onto a barrier.Luckily, he landed on his wheels and whilst it allowed Parker to close in, it wasn’t enough to deny him leaving Vienna with the maximum points haul and starting his season as he ended the last one. Despite Parker’s clear pace advantage, his mistakes in A1 repeated themselves in A3, dropping him down the overall standings and letting Caspar Morgen take the win in the final leg, securing second overall, with Thomas Oehler taking second in A3 and thus third overall.

Touring Masters final result:
1. Alexander Stocker
2. Caspar Morgen
3. Thomas Oehler
